It is estimated that between five and fifteen percent of the senior population suffer from malnutrition.
A survey by Ross Laboratories found that 30 percent of seniors skip at least one meal a day, while another study found that 16 percent of seniors consume fewer than 1000 calories a day, which is insufficient to maintain adequate nutrition.
Many factors are to blame, including the diminishing appetites in the elderly, medication side effects, dental problems such as missing teeth and poorly fitted dentures, fixed incomes, dementia and depression. Mature Services’ Nutrition Program is aware of these issues and strives to help older adults overcome nutritional challenges.
